Background of the Study
Urban slums and informal economies are often intertwined, reflecting both the challenges and resilience of urban populations. In Enugu East Local Government Area, Enugu State, urban slums represent areas marked by concentrated poverty, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to formal services. Concurrently, informal economies thrive as residents create alternative livelihood strategies to cope with these adversities (Okafor, 2023). These informal activities, including street vending, small-scale trading, and unregulated services, while lacking formal recognition, are vital for survival. The interplay between urban slums and informal economies presents a complex socio-economic landscape that requires careful analysis. Recent studies suggest that although informal economies provide necessary income, they also perpetuate social inequalities and hinder comprehensive urban development (Eze, 2024). This study critically appraises the dynamics of urban slums and the informal economic sector in Enugu East, aiming to understand how these elements impact urban growth, social equity, and overall quality of life (Nwosu, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Urban slums in Enugu East are characterized by poverty, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to formal services, which have led to the growth of informal economies as a means of survival. However, reliance on informal economic activities often perpetuates social inequities and inhibits sustainable urban development (Chukwu, 2023). This study aims to investigate the challenges and opportunities presented by urban slums and informal economies, identifying the critical factors that influence their impact on urban development and residents’ livelihoods.

Objectives of the Study:

To appraise the relationship between urban slums and informal economies.

To assess the socio-economic impact of informal economic activities.

To propose strategies for integrating informal economies into formal urban development plans.

Research Questions:

How do urban slums contribute to the growth of informal economies in Enugu East?

What are the socio-economic impacts of informal economic activities on residents?

What measures can formalize and integrate informal economies into urban planning?

Research Hypotheses:

H1: Urban slums significantly influence the prevalence of informal economies.

H2: Informal economic activities have both positive and negative socio-economic impacts.

H3: Formal integration of informal economies can enhance urban development.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the critical dynamics of urban slums and informal economies in Enugu East. The insights gained will inform urban planning strategies aimed at improving living conditions and promoting equitable development in urban areas (Okeke, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the appraisal of urban slums and informal economies in Enugu East Local Government Area, focusing solely on their socio-economic impacts and integration challenges.

Definitions of Terms:

Urban Slums: Densely populated areas characterized by poverty and inadequate infrastructure.

Informal Economies: Economic activities that operate outside the formal regulatory framework.

Enugu East Local Government Area: The administrative region in Enugu State where the study is conducted.
